About
me

That’s me, Emily (she/her), with my then-3-year old daughter. In addition to photographing families since the early 2000’s, I’m a college professor at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, and I have a 20+ year career as an artist and documentary photographer. I exhibit and publish my work internationally, win awards and grants, and am a co-founder and creative director of We, Women, the largest social impact photography project by womxn in the United States.

In June 2024 my family will be relocating from Brooklyn, NY to Provincetown MA, and we are excited to establish roots in this special place. I grew up working on a community farm, and still fantasize about becoming a farmer. I love traveling, making just about anything, and filling our backyard with flowers and veggies.

I began doing family portrait commissions around the time my "Cheyenne River" series started getting noticed. People wanted art for their walls, but with their own children in the images. Excited and inspired, I jumped in and have loved working with families ever since.

And of course it goes without saying that I love photographing the beautiful chaos of my own family. Here’s a little taste for you:

It’s been a few years since the lockdown, but this essay by Emily Raboteau still moves me more than any article I’ve ever been part of. In honor of all we parents have been through, I’m sharing it with you.
